Power Play!

I’ve been dropping little hints here and there over the past year about a creator-owned series that I’ve been collaborating on with Kurt Christenson http://agentfenris.tumblr.com/ , and I think it’s finally time to start showing some of our hard work off!

The comic is called POWER PLAY, and the way that I like to describe it is like the X-Games, but with superpowers instead of skateboards.  Like Roller Derby, but with supernatural mutations rather than skates.
It’s about kids here in the NYC area who get superpowers in one way or another, and rather than fighting crime or trying to take over the world, they start an underground sports league to show off their new moves.

You’ll be hearing a lot more about this from me over the next couple of months, but for now, to whet your appetite, here are a couple of character designs of some of the main characters:

This is Mac, he can turn into whatever substance he touches

And the is the Ice Queen, she can create and control ice

Also, one of the things we’re aiming to do with this series is to really explore the new possibilities opened up by digital comics, especially Comixology.  When I first saw their program, and how the panels slide from one part of the page to another, and zoom in and out and things like that, I said “awesome!  But these comics are made for print, what would we be able to do if we planned something specifically for this digital format?”  So that’s what we’re planning to do here.  First we’re going to figure out how to do the best story we can on a digital platform, and THEN we’ll figure out how to turn it into print.  That’s the opposite of how it’s usually done, and I have to say, it’s pretty fun to be able to explore this new, largely untested medium, and see what the new storytelling opportunities and possibilities are.  Exciting stuff!

That’s it for now!  Stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks!
