For most of my professional life, I’ve been the guy who answers every email as soon as humanly possible. I was always able to divert focus to the mundane task of saying “yes” “no” “awesome” “that doesn’t work because…” and then returning to whatever I was doing.

Good Advice, Josh!  I try to only answer non-urgent e-mails at certain times of the day, just to keep myself organized and prevent myself from being interrupted. 
Also you brought up an excellent point that sometimes things should be emails, but sometimes they should be phone calls.  Some things are simply more conveniently settled when you can actually talk to someone.
